One killed and 170 properties broken or destroyed as fireplace burns in Japan

A fireplace has killed one and broken or burned 170 buildings after beginning throughout sturdy winds in south-western Japan.

Aerial footage confirmed properties decreased to rubble and thick plumes of smoke rising from the hilly Saganoseki district of Oita metropolis.

It has burned 48,900 sq. metres – roughly the dimensions of seven soccer pitches – forcing 175 residents within the district, some 770 km (478 miles) southwest of Tokyo, to evacuate to an emergency shelter, Japan’s Hearth and Catastrophe Administration Company stated.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi posted a press release on X pledging to “provide maximum support” and providing sympathy for these affected.

The variety of buildings and dimension of the world engulfed in flames make it the biggest city fireplace in Japan since a 1976 fireplace in Sakata, excluding incidents brought on by earthquakes.
