Israel unleashes big strikes on Beirut – with Hezbollah chief the suspected goal

Israel has unleashed a sequence of big strikes on Beirut, with its navy saying it struck the central headquarters of the militant group Hezbollah.

The assault shook home windows throughout the Lebanese capital and despatched thick clouds of smoke billowing into the air.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah was the meant goal of the strike and the Israeli navy was investigating if he was hit, three main Israeli TV channels reported.

Lebanon’s well being ministry stated at the very least two had been killed and 76 wounded within the strikes. It stated the figures had been preliminary.

The Israeli navy claimed it had carried out a “precise strike” on Hezbollah’s headquarters which it stated had been “embedded under residential buildings in the heart of the Dahieh in Beirut”.

It was the strongest strike carried out by Israel in Beirut throughout its practically year-long battle with Hezbollah, which started when the Iran-backed group started firing rockets into Israel nearly instantly after Hamas attacked from Gaza on 7 October.

Israel has struck the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut, generally known as Dahieh, 4 instances during the last week – killing at the very least three senior Hezbollah commanders.

Israeli navy spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated the central command centre was embedded deep inside civilian areas.

4 buildings in Dahieh had been diminished to rubble, Hezbollah’s Al-Manar TV reported.

Iran’s embassy in Beirut described the strikes as a “dangerous, game-changing escalation”, calling them a “crime” that deserves “appropriate punishment”.

The strikes got here shortly after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to maintain up Israel’s assaults on Iranian-backed fighters in Lebanon throughout a speech to the United Nations Basic Meeting.

“As long as Hezbollah chooses the path of war, Israel has no choice, and Israel has every right to remove this threat and return our citizens to their homes safely,” he stated.

“Israel has been tolerating this intolerable situation for nearly a year. Well, I’ve come here today to say enough is enough.”

The battle between Israel and Hezbollah has dramatically escalated this week, with Israeli airstrikes killing greater than 700 individuals in Lebanon, elevating fears of an all-out struggle between the 2 sides.

Tens of hundreds have been compelled to flee their houses on either side of the border.
