UK handy over sovereignty of Chagos Islands to Mauritius after decades-long dispute

The UK will hand over sovereignty of the distant Chagos Islands to Mauritius after a decades-long dispute.

The deal to switch the Indian Ocean archipelago to Mauritius consists of the tropical atoll of Diego Garcia, house to a army base utilized by the UK and the US that performs a vital position within the area’s stability and worldwide safety.

Underneath the settlement, the bottom will stay beneath UK and US jurisdiction for at the least the subsequent 99 years.

The UK authorities stated that the treaty would “address wrongs of the past and demonstrate the commitment of both parties to support the welfare” of Chagossians – the native folks of the islands.

An announcement from the Mauritian and UK governments stated Mauritius is now “free to implement a programme of resettlement” on the islands, aside from Diego Garcia, and the UK will present cash and different assist to Chagossians who needed to go away.

The UK can even present a “package of financial support” to Mauritius, together with annual funds for the subsequent 99 years and can present funding for an infrastructure partnership.

US President Joe Biden welcomed the transfer, saying: “I applaud the historic agreement.

“It’s a clear demonstration that by means of diplomacy and partnership, nations can overcome long-standing historic challenges to succeed in peaceable and mutually useful outcomes.”

The agreement is subject to the finalisation of a treaty and supporting legal instruments, with both Mauritius and the UK committing to complete “as rapidly as attainable”.
