Two British economists amongst Nobel Prize winners following analysis into inequality

Two British professors are among the many winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in economics.

Simon Johnson, 61, and James A Robinson, 64, have been recognised by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his or her “studies of how institutions are formed and affect prosperity”.

They had been joined by Turkish economist Daron Acemoglu – additionally a professor – in profitable the prize which features a share of 11 million Swedish kronor (£808,522).

Their analysis explains why societies with poor rule of legislation and exploitative establishments don’t generate sustainable progress.

Prof Acemoglu and Prof Johnson work on the Massachusetts Institute of Know-how (MIT) whereas Prof Robinson conducts his analysis on the College of Chicago.

“Reducing the vast differences in income between countries is one of our time’s greatest challenges. The laureates have demonstrated the importance of societal institutions for achieving this,” stated Jakob Svensson, chair of the committee for the prize in financial sciences.

He stated their analysis has offered “a much deeper understanding of the root causes of why countries fail or succeed”.

However he added that “democracy is not a panacea. Introducing democracy is very hard. When you introduce elections, that sometimes creates conflict.”

The College of Chicago described Prof Robinson as an economist and political scientist whose analysis examines the relationships between political energy and establishments and prosperity.

It stated he has performed fieldwork around the globe together with Bolivia, Colombia, Haiti, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Sierra Leone.

Simon Johnson is a professor on the MIT Sloan Faculty of Administration and was beforehand chief economist on the Worldwide Financial Fund between 2007 and 2008.

Previous winners of the economics award embody a bunch of influential thinkers like Milton Friedman, John Nash – performed by actor Russell Crowe within the 2001 movie A Lovely Thoughts, and extra lately former US Federal Reserve chair Ben Bernanke.
