Barrett marketing campaign recieves stop and desist letter for election misinformation

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — With lower than a month to go till the election, the Division of Legal professional Normal has despatched a stop and desist letter to the Tom Barrett for Congress marketing campaign over allegedly trying to disenfranchise Black voters in Michigan with inaccurate election info.

The leaders of the Michigan Legislative Black Caucus, Chair Sen. Erica Geiss (D-1) and Vice Chair Sen. Sarah Anthony, Dist. 21 filed a grievance with the Division of Legal professional Normal over the weekend requesting that the Division examine Tom Barrett and his marketing campaign for potential violations of Michigan election legislation.

This grievance stems from two differing adverts positioned in two separate Lansing information sources.

The Barrett Marketing campaign just lately positioned a full-page commercial within the Oct. 2 version of The Michigan Bulletin, a Black-owned publication that the grievance says serves a predominantly Black viewers in Lansing and payments itself as being “committed to preserving African-American journalism and news photography.”

The advert positioned within the Bulletin says to vote for Barrett “On November 6,” when Election Day is definitely on Nov. 5.

As compared, the marketing campaign positioned an identical commercial within the Metropolis Pulse, which the grievance says doesn’t have a primarily Black readership. This advert appropriately listed Election Day as being Nov. 5.

“At best, Tom Barrett and his Campaign have committed a shocking oversight which will undoubtedly lead to confusion by Black voters in Lansing…” the grievance reads. “And, at worst, this ad could be part of an intentional strategy to ‘deter’ Black voters by deceiving them into showing up to vote on the day after the 2024 election.”

It has not been confirmed whether or not or not the incorrect election info was intentional.

Nonetheless, intentionally spreading election misinformation is a felony in Michigan, and the Division of Legal professional Normal has despatched a cease-and-desist letter to the Barrett marketing campaign imploring them to right the incorrect advert and make sure the accuracy of future marketing campaign materials.

In keeping with the letter, the Barrett Marketing campaign intends to run a correction within the subsequent version of the Bulletin.
