LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A person will stand trial for a September incident the place he pulled a handgun on a Jackson County deputy, the Jackson County Workplace of the Sheriff introduced Thursday.

Jackson County Sheriff Gary Schuette says that on Sept. 19, a deputy was despatched to a house in Leoni Township to arrest 41-year-old James Mitchell Kerr on a felony warrant for probation violation and a couple of misdemeanor warrants.

Upon arrival, the deputy encountered Kerr on a using mower and directed him to get off the mower. As a substitute, he tried to drive the mower away, inflicting the deputy to chase after him till he stopped the mower in a ditch.

Sheriff Schuette says the deputy instructed Kerr to conform or be tased, however Kerr as an alternative obtained off of the mower and started strolling away, earlier than going again to the mower, pulling out a handgun hidden on the mower, and pointing it on the deputy.

The deputy then tased Kerr, inflicting him to shoot himself within the hand with the handgun. After extra legislation enforcement arrived on the scene, Kerr was arrested, obtained therapy for the gunshot wound on the hospital, and was then taken to jail.

The Michigan State Police and the Sheriff’s Workplace every carried out impartial investigations of the incident, based on Sheriff Schuette. The Sheriff’s Workplace’s investigation concluded that the deputy didn’t violate coverage throughout the incident.

Kerr was charged with Assault with Intent to Homicide, Felony Firearm, and Resisting and Obstructing on Oct. 23 and was certain to face trial Thursday.
