‘Growing threat’ of tropical infections as new blood donor monitoring launched

A brand new warning system has been launched to watch donated blood as fears develop of newly rising viruses doubtlessly reaching the UK.

Dr Amanda Semper, from the UK Well being Safety Company (UKHSA), mentioned: “This new programme will help deepen our surveillance, acting as an early warning of infections for when they do arrive here, further strengthening our ability to detect them early.”

Initially, the brand new venture will see 5,000 blood samples taken from consenting blood donors over the following few months.

These samples might be analysed for viruses alongside the donor’s journey historical past, potential publicity to an infection and their vaccinations.
