A cryptocurrency entrepreneur has saved his promise and eaten a banana he purchased for $6.2m (£4.9m).

Justin Solar snapped up viral artwork piece Comic – consisting of a single banana duct-taped to a white wall – in an public sale at Sotheby’s in New York final week.

At a Hong Kong lodge, the 34-year-old took a chunk and instructed reporters: “It’s much better than other bananas. It’s really quite good.”

After buying Comic, Mr Solar beforehand stated the piece “represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community”.

“Additionally, in the coming days, I will personally eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honouring its place in both art history and popular culture,” he vowed.

The piece, by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, grew to become a web-based phenomenon when it debuted at Artwork Basel in Miami Seashore in 2019, and sparked debate over whether or not it was a joke or commentary on the artwork world.

Comic was first made with a banana that price simply 25 US cents (20p) and it is not the primary time the art work has been eaten.

A efficiency artist took the banana from the wall and ate it again in 2019, and a south Korean scholar did the identical final Might.

Mr Solar can technically exchange the fruit once more, as his $6.2m buy grants him a certificates of authenticity and the authority to duct-tape any banana to a wall and name it Comic.
