MSP: 17 automobiles pile up on I-94 close to Hartford

HARTFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — A crash shut down each instructions of I-94 close to Hartford Monday afternoon as lake-effect snow buffeted Southwest Michigan.

Michigan State Police reported the multivehicle crash close to mile marker 46 in a social media publish round 1:15 p.m. Fourteen passenger automobiles and three semi-trucks had been concerned and one individual was critically injured. There have been 15 different slide-offs not associated to that crash, MSP mentioned.

Heavy lake-effect alongside the lakeshore

Troopers say the crashes and slide-offs had been attributable to individuals driving too quick for situations together with heavy blowing snow that created whiteout situations. MSP referred to as on drivers to keep away from the freeway close to Hartford.

“Drive safely,” it wrote, “heavy snow (is) currently impacting travel.”

It’s not clear when the highway can be reopened.

Winter driving safety tips: Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles. Turn on headlights. Clear all windows, lights and the license plate. Remove distractions.

A winter storm warning was issued for Van Buren, Ottawa, Allegan, Cass and Berrien counties till Tuesday morning, with the prospect that some locations from about Holland to Benton Harbor might see 6 to 12 inches of snow.
