UK prepares 5 million vaccine doses in case of chicken flu pandemic

Greater than 5 million doses of a vaccine are being ready within the UK to fight any potential chicken flu pandemic.

The jab – the human H5 influenza vaccine – is just meant to be used if the virus spreads amongst people.

There isn’t any proof at this stage of human-to-human transmission, in line with the UK Well being Safety Company (UKHSA), which has secured a contract for the doses.

The company stated the acquisition is a part of “long-established plans” to spice up the UK’s entry to vaccines “for a wider range of pathogens of pandemic potential”.

Dr Meera Chand, rising an infection lead on the company, stated “early access to vaccines saves lives”.

“It is important for us to be prepared against a range of different influenza viruses that may pose human health risks,” she added.

“Adding H5 vaccines to the interventions already available to us will help us to be ready for a wider range of threats.”

There are various kinds of the virus, with one inflicting a “prolonged global outbreak” over the previous few years primarily in birds, the UKHSA stated.

The vaccine will probably be manufactured within the UK, by healthcare firm CSL Seqirus UK Restricted.

Two strands of the virus have been detected in some poultry, captive and wild birds within the UK, in line with the NHS, whereas individuals have been contaminated around the globe.

Final month, the Division for Atmosphere, Meals and Rural Affairs confirmed circumstances of chicken flu at a poultry farm in Yorkshire.

The division stated all poultry can be humanely killed and a safety zone set as much as cowl 3km across the web site.

In February 2021, some individuals died in Russia after catching one specific pressure, which has been present in birds within the UK.

The virus might be unfold by shut contact with birds or touching their droppings or bedding, although the NHS stated it’s uncommon for it to have an effect on people.
