Narendra Modi amongst mourners as former Indian PM Manmohan Singh cremated after state funeral

Former Indian prime minister Manmohan Singh has been cremated after a state funeral as politicians and the general public mourned his dying.

Broadly thought to be the architect of the nation’s financial reform programme, he died on Thursday aged 92.

His physique was taken on Saturday morning to the headquarters of his Congress social gathering in New Delhi, the place social gathering leaders and activists paid tribute to him and chanted: “Manmohan Singh lives forever.”

Abhishek Bishnoi, a celebration chief, mentioned Mr Singh’s dying was huge loss for the nation.

“He used to speak little, but his talent and his actions spoke louder than his words,” he mentioned.

Later, Mr Singh’s physique was transported to a crematorium floor for his final rites as troopers beat drums.

Authorities officers, politicians and relations paid their final respects to Mr Singh, whose casket was adorned with flowers and wrapped within the Indian flag.

Indian President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who known as Mr Singh one of many nation’s “most distinguished leaders”, attended the funeral ceremony.

Mr Singh’s physique was then transferred to a pyre as non secular hymns performed and he was cremated.

Authorities have declared a seven-day mourning interval and cancelled all cultural and leisure occasions throughout that point.

Mr Singh was prime minister for 10 years and chief of the Congress social gathering in parliament’s higher home.

He was chosen to be prime minister in 2004 by Sonia Gandhi, the widow of assassinated former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Mr Singh was re-elected in 2009, however his second time period was clouded by monetary scandals.
