Eric Morecambe’s trademark glasses fetch £20,000 at public sale

A pair of Eric Morecambe’s trademark glasses have fetched £20,000 at an public sale.

Memorabilia and private objects from the comedian’s former house in Hertfordshire, went up on the market following the demise of his widow Joan in March 2024.

His glasses had been synonymous along with his comedic persona and a pair in imitation tortoiseshell by firm Metzler bought alongside his Barling briar pipe and two black and white images of him with the spectacles.

The TV star was recognized for smoking pipes and a choice of them had been bought in quite a bit that fetched £1,100.

A tailcoat and trousers, writing desk, and Breitling watch had been among the many different auctioned objects beforehand owned by the comedian who fashioned one half of double act Morecambe And Smart.

Charles Hanson, of Hanson Auctioneers, stated: “We had been thrilled with the extraordinary outcomes achieved at this public sale.

“Eric Morecambe’s legacy lives on in the hearts of millions, and the prices reflect not only the quality and uniqueness of the items but also the deep affection fans continue to hold for him. It’s been an incredible two days!”

Morecambe was made an OBE in 1976 and his medal, awarded by the late Queen Elizabeth II, bought for £11,000, which was £8,000 above its highest estimate.

A Society of Movie and Tv Arts award for greatest mild leisure efficiency which went to Morecambe And Smart in 1970 additionally bought for £4,400.

An oil on canvas portray by royal portrait artist Richard Stone depicting Morecambe sitting down smoking a cigar bought for £15,000.

And a model of his ventriloquist dummy Charlie, which he took to America to seem on The Ed Sullivan Present, bought for £6,200.

The public sale home supplied his belongings in 700 tons on 10 and 11 January, greater than 40 years after Morecambe died of a coronary heart assault aged 58 in 1984.
