The chancellor has set herself towards the likes of many in Westminster who descend on the favored chain day-after-day.

Former overseas secretary Dominic Raab, for instance, was recognized for his fondness of rooster Caesar baguettes from Pret, and former chancellors Jeremy Hunt and Rishi Sunak have been additionally seen ducking into one of many cafes close to parliament.

And never for Ms Reeves is it a steak lunch championed by chief of the opposition, Kemi Badenoch.

Talking to Beth Rigby on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast, the chancellor defined her lunch routine on the day of the interview.

“And then, sort of living up to my sort of reputation of believing in value for money, I popped upstairs, made myself a cheese sandwich and had that for lunch.

“And now I am with you.”

The chancellor says she does generally go to get lunch from Pret, however in any other case her noon meal consists of cheddar between two slices made within the kitchen in her flat in Downing Road.

Requested if she was not too busy operating the UK’s funds for a culinary diversion, Ms Reeves mentioned: “Well, it doesn’t take long to make yourself a sandwich. And you save £5 for the process.”

The chancellor’s love of the sandwich places her at odds with Ms Badenoch.

Talking to The Spectator on the finish of final 12 months, the Tory chief claimed that “lunch is for wimps”.

She went on: “I’m not a sandwich person, I don’t think sandwiches are a real food, it’s what you have for breakfast… I will not touch bread if it is moist.”

As a substitute, Ms Badenoch mentioned she would “sometimes” get a steak.

Requested if she thought sandwiches have been for “wimps”, Ms Reeves laughed.

“Oh yes – I forget about that,” she mentioned.

“I didn’t go upstairs to make myself a steak… I haven’t got that much time on my hands.”

The chancellor will not have fear about her lunch habits inflicting any ructions in Downing Road – the prime minister beforehand declared sandwiches a “great British institution”.
