Ripple CEO Chris Larsen misplaced $150M in XRP after LastPass hack

Ripple CEO Chris Larsen misplaced 0M in XRP after LastPass hack

Cybercriminals behind the $150 million hack of Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen’s crypto wallets reportedly had entry to personal keys that have been saved within the password supervisor LastPass.

That’s based on crypto sleuth ZachXBT, who shared a forfeiture grievance filed by the US yesterday. The doc was submitted within the Northern District Court docket of California and disclosed the seizure of assorted cryptocurrencies, value over $23.6 million, from exchanges reminiscent of OKX, Kraken, and others.

ZachXBT claimed, “Up to this point Chris Larsen had not publicly disclosed the cause of the theft.”

In January 2024, hackers stole over 283 million XRP (value round $150 million) from Larsen’s crypto wallets. On the time, ZachXBT tracked the stolen property and claimed they have been being laundered by way of exchanges, together with “MEXC, Gate, Binance, Kraken, OKX, HTX, and HitBTC.”

The forfeiture grievance particulars how an affiliate of Larsen, who managed his crypto wallets, saved his personal keys in a web-based password supervisor that was breached in August 2022 and November 2022. 

Certainly, a timeline of hacks affecting LastPass correlates with the grievance. The grievance claims that stolen knowledge and passwords obtained from these breaches “were used to illegally, and without authorization, access the victims’ electronic accounts and steal information, cryptocurrency, and other data.”

Authorities seized the stolen funds below warrants issued by Justice of the Peace court docket judges within the Northern District of California. The grievance states that the funds ought to now be “forfeited to the US government for proper disposition.”
