State Home proposes to slash slavery penal exception clause

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A decision was launched within the Michigan Home of Representatives Tuesday, proposing an modification to the state Structure that might eradicate an exception to the prohibition of slavery.

At the moment, Article I, Part 9 of the Michigan Structure utterly bans slavery within the state of Michigan besides as punishment for a criminal offense, which is also referred to as a penal exception clause. The proposed modification would take away that exception from the language of the legislation.

Comparable exceptions exist in fifteen states, together with Michigan. Up to now ten years, just a few states, together with Alabama, Colorado, and Nebraska, have voted to amend their legal guidelines to take away the penal exception clause.

The Thirteenth Modification of the U.S. Structure additionally has a penal exception clause.
