Tariffs hit East Lansing stitching and quilting retailer

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The affect of sweeping tariffs put in place by the Trump administration is being felt right here in Mid-Michigan—with Nation Stitches in East Lansing saying costs will in all probability be going up.

The shop despatched an e-mail to prospects Tuesday, warning them of potential value will increase. 6 Information spoke to Ann Drane, one of many co-owners of the shop, who says some companies are already passing on prices to prospects.

“So, there will be tariffs on the majority of the sewing machines,” says Drane. “It’s really just gonna increase prices. Those will be passed down to us, and then we’ll have to pass those down to our consumers.”

Drane says most stitching machines have not been made within the U.S. because the 60s or 70s.

“Sewing machines and fabrics are mostly made out of the country. So, there’s gonna be a price increase on a lot of it. It really depends on where they’re made,” says Drane. “Price increases could be small, could be big.”

She says though they have not needed to cross on any hiked costs but, she warns they’re coming quickly.

“Our vendors have already started to contact us and let us know that they will be passing on the price. So, we’ve been hearing this for the past few months,” says Drane. “Some have already started. Others will start any time between May and August.”

Some objects could also be lots harder to search out.

“Some vendors tell us they’re not going to reorder things right away. So, we’re probably not gonna have a product,” says Drane. “We’re gonna have trouble getting the product that we want, and that our customers want.”

From materials to stitching threads, Drane says her distributors are from locations everywhere in the world, together with Pakistan, China, and even Switzerland.

“It’s a variety of price increases just depending on where they’re made,” says Drane. “And we’re not quite sure what all those prices will be.”
