MSU alumnus heads to U.S. Open golf qualifiers

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Golf is in full swing, and there is a Michigan State College alumnus headed to the U.S. Open qualifiers.

Andrew Walker has been {golfing} since he was a toddler. He was named Michigan’s Mister Golf thrice in Highschool and was the youngest African American to ever qualify for the U.S. Novice championship again in 2013, on the age of 14.

MSU alumnus heads to U.S. Open golf qualifiers

On Monday, he’s competing in South Bend, Indiana, for the U.S. Open native qualifiers. After the native qualifiers, Walker hopes to make it to the ultimate qualifying spherical, then to the U.S. Open, which occurs within the second week of June. Walker is on the APGA tour and stated he is able to get into his first main championship.

“I’m really excited, I’ve been looking forward to the U.S. Open Local since basically the end of my last event.” Walker continued, “I’m feeling really confident, so looking forward to go out and see what I can do. Hopefully make it through to sectionals and see what happens from there.”

Walker will compete in opposition to 84 gamers on Monday and the highest 5 gamers will advance to the qualifying finals.
