East Lansing police warn of missed jury responsibility, toll highway scams

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — When you get a textual content saying you missed jury responsibility and must pay—the East Lansing Police Division says it’s undoubtedly a rip-off.

Police say a number of members of the neighborhood have reported that they acquired a textual content message saying they’ve missed jury responsibility. The textual content would inform the recipient to click on a hyperlink or go to a kiosk to make a cost, threatening severe penalties if they do not comply.

Among the messages have spoofed the ELPD cellphone quantity, (517) 351-4220.

ELPD says they don’t make calls about jury responsibility, and that neither they nor the 54B District Courtroom ship texts to residents.

The police division additionally says some residents have reported that they’ve acquired messages threatening penalties if they do not pay excellent toll highway violations by clicking a hyperlink. Observe that Michigan doesn’t have any toll roads.
