Delta Township cancels fireworks present because of monetary hardship

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) —The Delta Township Board has canceled this 12 months’s July 3 fireworks present because of monetary pressure, citing drain evaluation prices and this 12 months’s failed public security millage because the explanation why.

In April, the township board permitted a $34,650 contract with Evening Magic Shows for the annual July 3 fireworks present.

In keeping with Township Supervisor Brian T. Reed, this was performed in April to permit the township to plan for the occasion correctly, however the Financial institution Drain Intercounty venture assessments have “impacted” the township’s capability to pay for the fireworks.

The township supervisor additionally says the failure of the Eaton County public security millage would make it tougher to carry the occasion safely.

Reed offered these considerations to the township board and advisable that the occasion be canceled and the township purchase out the contract with the fireworks firm. The board voted to take action Monday night.

Delta Township Supervisor Fonda J. Brewer echoed Reed’s considerations, saying that not solely does the county not have sufficient deputies to assist the occasion, however ongoing staffing shortages at close by departments are making it harder to safe mutual help.

“Hosting an event of this magnitude—typically drawing crowds of 20,000 or more—requires a significant public safety effort (including police, fire, emergency management, dispatch, etc.),’ wrote Brewer in an email sent to 6 News. “Given the present pressures, we’re unable to assist this occasion safely and responsibly.”
