One individual lacking after mudslide buries Swiss mountain village

One individual is lacking after a deluge of rock, mud and ice buried 90% of a Swiss mountain village, officers have mentioned.

It got here after a glacier overlooking the settlement of Blatten, in southern Switzerland, partially collapsed on Wednesday, sending the particles raining down.

“An unbelievable amount of material thundered down into the valley,” Matthias Ebener, a spokesman for native authorities within the Valais canton.

Footage shared on social media confirmed the second the particles got here down, abandoning destroyed buildings and different infrastructure within the village, which is nestled within the Loetschental valley.

Emergency providers warned people who the realm was hazardous and urged them to remain away.

Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter expressed her solidarity with villagers.

‘It is horrible to lose your house,” she said in a social media post. “In these hours, I really feel for the residents of Blatten.”
