'Blow to public media': WKAR GM addresses Corp. for Public Broadcasting closure

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Friday, the Company for Public Broadcasting (CPB) introduced it was starting to close down in mild of the GOP-led laws that pulled already-approved funding to public broadcasting.

“Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations,” CPB President Patricia Harrison mentioned in a press release.

Company for Public Broadcasting says it’s starting to close down

WKAR Normal Supervisor Shawn Turner expressed disappointment that the CPB is shutting down, but additionally acknowledged the station has ready for this risk.

“While not unexpected, the news that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down is another disappointing blow to public media,” Turner mentioned. “CPB has been a significant companion to stations like WKAR for many years. The lack of the group’s consultants, help, and advocacy shall be felt at stations throughout the nation.

“At WKAR, we fought hard to avoid this outcome, but we also prepared for this moment. As a result, I can say with confidence that, with our current team, the help of our community and if our university, this station will continue to serve mid-Michigan for the foreseeable future.”

Housed inside Michigan State College’s School of Communication Arts and Sciences, adjoining to the college’s College of Journalism, the station is owned by MSU. It was the third academic TV station to launch in america and is the second-oldest nonetheless in operation.
