Former assistant to AfD politician goes on trial over Chinese language spy expenses

A former assistant to a far-right member of the European Parliament has gone on trial accused of spying for China. 

Jian G labored within the parliamentary workplace of Maximilian Krah, a member of the Different for Germany (AfD) celebration, who sat within the European Parliament between 2019 and 2025.

Prosecutors declare Mr G, whose full title has not been launched consistent with Germany’s privateness legal guidelines, had been working for a Chinese language secret service since 2002.

The German nationwide is accused of gathering intelligence and confidential paperwork to move on to Chinese language officers whereas working for Mr Krah between September 2019 and April 2024.

A second defendant, Chinese language nationwide Jaqi X, is accused of aiding him, having labored for a logistics firm at Leipzig Airport, the place she is alleged to have supplied information on the transportation of defence items, flights, freight, and passengers.

Beijing has denied accusations of espionage in Europe.

The Chinese language overseas ministry didn’t instantly reply on Tuesday to a Reuters request for touch upon the German case.

Krah is a controversial determine, even inside his personal celebration.
