LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The capital metropolis could quickly see a brand new LGBTQ+ inclusive homeless shelter.

Think about you’re out on the streets and with no place to relaxation your head and name residence. You end up searching for a shelter catered to these within the LGBTQ+ group, however you’re feeling as if you must change to remain there.

That’s how Lucas Keith says he felt again in 2019.

“I felt like they weren’t accepting at all,” said Keith. “So, I just couldn’t tell them my gender identity, or what I identified as, or what name I was going by at the time.”

Keith is a transgender male, and says they needed to go by their start identify, and even hiding their transgender tattoo.

“I felt like I could not be my true self once I was there,” stated Keith.

Not feeling as in the event that they belong is what pushed Luna Brown to move begin the creation of “A Place for Us,” a queer inclusive shelter that’s open to everybody.

“It’s very important not just for the LGBT, but for people of different religions and faiths,” said Keith. “Who don’t feel comfortable with the current systems that exist.”

Brown says the shelter is presently searching for grants and specializing in discovering a location to construct the shelter, and likewise says the shelter will likely be welcoming and accepting of unhoused individuals who could also be on medication or combating drug use.

“These people need treatment,” said Brown. “They are not providing good alternate options, and that is an issue, and lots of people simply find yourself proper again on the streets.”

Keith says as soon as the shelter is up and operating, it’ll enable trans individuals like him to not solely really feel included, but additionally to be accepted.

“If there was an LGBTQ+ friendly shelter in Lansing when I was homeless,” said Keith. “It would’ve helped me and others who are homeless right now.”
