UAW staff might face smaller bonus checks on account of tariffs

LANSING, (Mich.) WLNS — United Auto Employees union members might lose 1000’s of {dollars} in bonus checks on account of tariffs.

In accordance with Automotive Information, hourly UAW staff obtained year-end bonuses final 12 months, exceeding $10,000 from Ford, Basic Motors, and Stellantis, however now, some fear that monetary increase is perhaps depleted because of President Trump’s tariffs.

On April 3, President Donald Trump introduced a 25% tariff on all imported vehicles and light-duty vans. Automakers warned these taxes might elevate costs and damage enterprise, and now, it is trying like misplaced income might begin hitting near residence for UAW union members.

Joel Spitz is a UAW member and a workforce chief at GM’s Lansing Delta Township Meeting Plant, and stated he isn’t shocked.

“I definitely know it’s gonna happen, ‘I knew it was coming’ kind of thing,” stated Spitz.

Whereas hourly union staff obtained bonuses exceeding $10,000 final 12 months, their bonuses could fall by “at least” $3,000 to $5,000, with Stellantis staff bracing to obtain no bonus in any respect as automakers say they’re dropping billions of {dollars} in income on account of tariffs.

Spitz says whereas they’re technically bonus checks, they’ve change into essential for a lot of staff.

“It’s definitely gonna be an issue for a lot of people, I mean a lot of people rely on it,” stated Spitz.

Spitz stated for a very long time, bonuses made up for lackluster pay.

“You know, we’ve been getting them for years, and our pay didn’t really keep up for a long time, so this was the trade off,” stated Spitz.

Earlier this 12 months, UAW President Shawn Fain expressed help for the tariffs, saying “These tariffs are a major step in the right direction for autoworkers and blue-collar communities across the country, and it is now on the automakers, from the Big Three to Volkswagen and beyond, to bring back good union jobs to the U.S.”

Now, Spitz thinks individuals should get used to shallower pockets.

“Maybe some people budget through out the year that they have all their check covers their expenses, and then that profit sharing is their kitchen re-model or their vacation… so now, that’s not gonna happen.”
