East Lansing police face complaints after chaotic weekend

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A metropolis police oversight committee assembly Friday night will overview reviews from a “disruptive” weekend downtown, as advocates assist three individuals planning to file complaints in opposition to the East Lansing Police Division (ELPD).

ELPD mentioned officers responded to a number of incidents, made a number of arrests and filed a felony cost in opposition to a 21-year-old man for carrying a hid weapon after an incident involving a knife.

Nadia Sellers, founding father of the Honey Bear Challenge, mentioned she plans to attend the assembly with three individuals who intend to file complaints about police conduct. She described her group as a social justice program geared toward empowering mid-Michigan residents by addressing native wants and selling equality.

Sellers mentioned she’s spoken with a number of individuals who had been concerned within the weekend incidents and at the least one among them alleges repeated mistreatment by the ELPD.

“I’m going to be filing one as John Doe 1 and John Doe 2 to protect individuals’ names, and then we have another victim that wasn’t part of this specific weekend, but reached out to us because he’s been suffering in silence,” Sellers mentioned. “He’s been mistreated and harassed by the East Lansing police on multiple occasions and his family has been traumatized.”

She continued: “So when he heard about us, he came to us, told us his story, and we verified it. And it was factual because they have videos, and they have witnessed the statements. So he’s going to be there tonight, advocating for himself and filing a complaint.”

Footage of the incidents has circulated on social media, however no video has been shared with 6 Information. The Honey Bear Challenge has declined a number of requests to supply its recordings.

ELPD mentioned it’s reviewing video and different supplies to find out what may be launched with out jeopardizing open investigations.

The oversight assembly is scheduled for six p.m. Friday on the East Lansing Hannah Group Heart on Abbott Street.
