Michigan Dept. of Treasury warns of textual content rip-off

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The Michigan Division of Treasury is warning of a textual content rip-off mentioning the company.

The company says cyber criminals are sending unsolicited textual content messages telling recipients they’re due a tax refund — but when they do not reply rapidly with banking data, they will forfeit the refund.

The company studies it solely communicates with folks by way of official U.S. Postal Service supply.

“This scam is just another trick in the cybercriminal playbook,” Katina Litterini, who oversees Treasury’s Tax Administration Providers Bureau, was quoted in a division information launch. “Taxpayers who receive this bogus text message should immediately delete it. If you have questions about an outstanding refund, taxes owed or another state tax issue, please contact us so we can log the scam and discuss your options.”

The company says if an individual receives this rip-off textual content and has questions on their taxes, they’ll name the Treasury’s Particular person Revenue Tax Info Line at 517-636-4486.
