LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Supplemental Vitamin Help Program (SNAP) advantages will pause Nov. 1 because of the ongoing federal authorities shutdown, prompting meals banks in Michigan to ramp up operations and the state to pledge extra funding to assist households.

“We have withstood a lot of emergencies over the years, and we’re going to be here for neighbors no matter what,” mentioned Michelle Lantz, CEO of Larger Lansing Meals Financial institution.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration has dedicated to preserving meals on households’ tables in the course of the pause, directing assist to organizations together with Larger Lansing Meals Financial institution and the Meals Financial institution Council of Michigan. Whitmer introduced the state will donate $4.5 million to the Meals Financial institution Council to bolster statewide response.

“Food banks across America and including ours are here for the emergency needs that come up like this. But it does take the involvement of the community, additional donations and food for us to meet that need,” Lantz mentioned.

Lantz mentioned the meals financial institution and its companions have seen a pointy improve in guests within the wake of the shutdown and the looming SNAP interruption.

“We and our partners, the food banks, the agencies that serve neighbors right on the front lines, have seen a dramatic increase in the number of people that are coming out for food,” she mentioned. “They simply don’t have the money to buy the food that they normally would, especially on the SNAP cards.”

To fulfill the surge, Larger Lansing Meals Financial institution is buying and distributing extra meals instantly.

“We are increasing the amount of food we’re putting out into the community. We’re increasing the volume of food that we’re purchasing right now so that we can meet that need of everyone who is being affected,” Lantz mentioned.

In contrast with final month, Lantz mentioned the group is seeing almost a 100% improve in individuals looking for help.

“So we’re really encouraging people right now to help us make sure that everybody in the seven-county region that we serve is going to have the food on their tables that they deserve and require over the next few weeks,” she mentioned. “We’ve been here for 40 years and we’re going to be here for perpetuity.”

The $4.5 million in state funds shall be distributed throughout Michigan’s 83 counties, serving to present meals to residents and supporting supply to those that can’t drive.
