Paint the Plow is an annual initiative that sees college students paint snowplow blades with designs selling protected driving and elevating consciousness for the dear work accomplished by snowplow operators throughout harsh Michigan winters.
This yr, the message was “Give plows space; it’s not a race,” reminding drivers to decelerate and provides snowplows room to do their job. State regulation requires drivers to maintain at the very least 200 toes away from a snowplow.
“It’s great that the students are helping us get the word out on the importance of giving us room to work,” said MDOT maintenance worker Adam Westendorf. “I think it’s good that they’re involved with getting these important safety messages out in a fun way.”
The painted plows can be seen throughout the state over the winter, with snowplow names and places accessible on MI Drive, MDOT’s web site that enables drivers to view visitors, street incidents, and development initiatives.
