Baroness Harman points warning to Labour MPs who arrange group over Reform UK menace

The Labour MPs who’ve arrange a strain group to counter the specter of Reform UK have been warned they risked selling factionalism.

Baroness Harman, a former deputy chief of the Labour Get together, mentioned organising the group was additionally “problematic” as a result of it appeared that these concerned didn’t imagine the management was being efficient on a specific situation.

Talking on the Electoral Dysfunction podcast with Sky’s political editor Beth Rigby, the Labour peer mentioned: “I think it’s problematic for two reasons.

“Firstly, as a result of if you happen to arrange a gaggle whose cause for formation is to press the federal government to do one thing, the implication is the federal government is just not doing it.

“And therefore, if you set up a group who’s wanting the government to be effective on immigration, then you’re immediately suggesting to your voters and your constituents that they’re right, that they’re thinking that the government is not doing enough. So I think it has the reverse effect than what they’re proposing it for.”

The casual cohort of Labour MPs who make up the brand new group is drawn from the 89 constituencies the place Nigel Farage’s social gathering got here second to Labour on the July basic election.

“We’re a fearless bunch,” the MP mentioned, including the group weren’t afraid to “call a spade a spade”.

However Ms Harman, who represented the constituency of Camberwell and Peckham for almost 40 years earlier than standing down in 2021, mentioned she was “worried about factions within government”.

She highlighted how the earlier Conservative authorities struggled with the “five families” of inner teams such because the Brexit-supporting European Analysis Group (ERG) and the Northern Analysis Group, which put strain on the federal government to fulfill its manifesto dedication of levelling up the nations and areas.

“The point is, we don’t want regionalism,” she mentioned. “We don’t want factionalism and all these different tribes.

“I feel it is honest sufficient to have a ladies’s group of Labour MPs, or a London Labour group of MPs, or a coastal city group of Labour MPs – however I feel to arrange a gaggle with the concept the federal government is one way or the other not delivering on what it must be, I feel that that is unhealthy.”

She continued: “So my suggestion to….the Purple wall group, is simply watch out to not tip into something that may appear to be factionalism.

“They’ve only just been elected as Labour MPs. They should support the government and, play their part in the parliamentary Labour Party – but don’t set up all these flipping groups.”
