"Better life, better choices:" Samaritas hosts refugee artwork present

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A non-profit group helps to start out a brand new life for refugees within the state. 

Samaritas hosted an artwork present this Wednesday afternoon in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. 

The occasion is centered on educating the general public concerning the journeys that many younger Latino refugees face once they arrive in america. 

Sulma Vasquez left her residence in Honduras on the age of 16. She first moved to El Paso, Texas the place she lived in a shelter for migrants. 

She says she got here to america for a greater future. 

“You came here for a better life, better choices,” mentioned Vasquez. 

Now on the age of 24 and residing in Lansing along with her five-year-old son, she’s discovered a love for portray. 

“Paint helps me go through all those bad things that have happened to me,” mentioned Vasquez. 

Vasquez says that immigrants assist develop america. 

“We are always working hard to make this country good,” mentioned Vasquez. 

Daniel Soza, recruiting workforce lead with Samaritas, says these sorts of occasions deliver consciousness to the continuing points round immigration inside our nation. 

“It saddens me to hear that kind of rhetoric in the media. It really comes down to a lack of information and misinformation,” mentioned Soza. “If we really took the time to look at the immigration system and see why things are the way they are. I think we’d have a clear picture of what immigration really looks like in this county.” 

Samaritas helps Michigan households home refugees from all around the world. They assist set households by foster care licensing. 

Vasquez says everybody is identical no matter the place they’re from. 

“We are humans. Everybody is human. It’s just because different colors or because we come from different countries. It doesn’t make sense,” mentioned Vasquez.
