China says US ‘gravely backpedalled’ over change to language round Taiwan

China says the US has “gravely backpedalled” on its place on Taiwan after a authorities reality sheet was modified to take away a line on American opposition to independence for the breakaway province.

“We urge the US to… stop emboldening and supporting Taiwan independence and avoid further damaging China-US relations and the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait,” Chinese language overseas ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated.

Taiwan and China break up in 1949 through the civil battle that introduced the communists to energy on the mainland, with the defeated Nationalists fleeing throughout the Taiwan Strait to arrange a rival authorities on the island.

In the present day, China views Taiwan as a breakaway province, with which it guarantees to in the future reunify, and has not dominated out the usage of power to take action.

Tensions between the US and China over Taiwan’s independence have spanned many years, significantly as Chinese language warplanes have repeatedly flown near the island’s airspace.

The newest row comes after the US State Division eliminated the phrase “we do not support Taiwan independence” from a reality sheet final week.

The doc on America’s relations with Taiwan is posted on its web site.

Taiwan’s authorities welcomed the transfer, although a press release on Monday didn’t point out the language particularly.

Its overseas ministry famous the change with up to date textual content that’s “positive and friendly toward us, reflecting the close and amicable partnership between Taiwan and the United States”.

It is unclear precisely why the State Division modified the language – it did so briefly in Might 2022 earlier than altering it again – and whether or not it signifies a change in method below President Donald Trump.

In a press release, the State Division stated: “As is routine, the fact sheet was updated to inform the general public about our unofficial relationship with Taiwan.”

“The United States remains committed to its one China policy,” the spokesperson stated, referring to Washington formally taking no place on Taiwan’s sovereignty and solely acknowledging China’s place on the topic.

It added that the US opposes any “unilateral changes to the status quo from either side”.
