Considerations develop over circumstances at Jackson County Jail 

JACKSON, Mich. (WLNS) — A mom from Oregon has complaints about circumstances on the Jackson County Jail, the place her son and lots of different inmates reside. 

6 Information spoke to Patti Hasbrouck, a mom of an inmate on the jail positioned on Wesley St. within the metropolis of Jackson, who says her son and different inmates live in poor circumstances, and that she worries for his or her security and well-being whereas in custody.

Hasbrouck says she acknowledges that jail is supposed to be a punishment, however needs the inmates to dwell in higher circumstances. She says her son, who needs to stay nameless, has been in jail for 3 months and shares a cell with 14 different males. 

“And one rest room, and one bathe,” mentioned Hasbrouck. 

Hasbrouck says her son claims their meals parts have been lower in half for a couple of days a couple of weeks in the past.

“Like literally a quarter of a cup. Of whatever it was,” said Hasbrouck. “The blokes have been ravenous and digging into their commissary stashes.”  

Lt. Diane Ashby, an worker on the jail, says the inmates get breakfast at 4 a.m. and have lunch at 11 a.m. 

“Food is prepared by Canteen Food Services,” said Ashby. “We follow MDOC guidelines on that.” 

Hasbrouck says she’s unable to see her son whereas he’s in jail. Ashby says the jail stopped doing in-person conferences years in the past. 

“Due to contraband coming in,” said Ashby. “So, we had to switch over to smart communications, and that is all done by kiosk and phone.”

Hasbrouck says her son says the sleeping preparations are additionally unfit for him and the opposite inmates. 

“And they are steel-framed,” said Hasbrouck. “Steel slab, and they have some kind of mat. They get a sheet, and a blanket, and that’s it.”

Ashby acknowledges the poor situation of the jail and says the county has beforehand proposed three millages to repair the problems, however none have handed. 

“We’re trying to do the best that we can, given what we have. We have put it out there ourselves,” said Ashby. “That we do have these conditions, and we’ve tried passing millages before, and the public has not accepted those.”
