Dame Maggie Smith, identified for her roles in Harry Potter and Downton Abbey, has died on the age of 89, her sons have mentioned.
The actress died in hospital, her kids Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens mentioned.
In an announcement, they mentioned: “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.
“We want to take this chance to thank the great employees on the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for his or her care and unstinting kindness throughout her last days.
“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”
Dame Maggie received a greatest actress Oscar for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie in 1969 and greatest supporting actress for California Suite in 1978.
