Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has mentioned you “cannot spy against an ally” after reviews of US gathering intelligence on Greenland.

The feedback are the newest within the dispute over Donald Trump’s ongoing efforts to push for US management over Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

They arrive after reviews in US media that Washington’s spy businesses have been informed to give attention to Greenland, together with on the island’s independence motion, and sentiment round US extraction of its mineral assets.

Why does the US need Greenland?

On Thursday, Denmark’s international minister summoned the US ambassador to handle the reviews in The Wall Avenue Journal.

Ms Frederiksen referred to the report as “rumours”, whereas Tulsi Gabbard, the US director of nationwide intelligence, mentioned in a press release she had made three “criminal” referrals to the US justice division over intelligence group leaks.

Ms Gabbard’s workplace mentioned The Wall Avenue Journal “should be ashamed of aiding deep state actors who seek to undermine the President by politicising and leaking classified information.

“They’re breaking the legislation and undermining our nation’s safety and democracy. Those that leak categorized data might be discovered and held accountable to the fullest extent of the legislation.”

In March, Greenland’s prime minister, Jens-Frederik Nielsen, said Washington was “not getting” the nation.

Greenland, an enormous, resource-rich island, is a self-governing territory of Denmark – a NATO ally of the US.

Mr Trump has mentioned he needs to annex the territory, claiming the US wants it for nationwide safety functions.

In March, a White Home official mentioned Greenland’s provide of uncommon earth minerals would energy the following era of the US economic system.

He mentioned: “I think there’s a good possibility that we could do it without military force”, however warned: “I don’t take anything off the table.”

Greenland’s residents and politicians have reacted with anger to his repeated ideas, with Danish leaders additionally criticising them.

Mr Nielsen was talking days after after US Vice President JD Vance visited Greenland together with his spouse Usha and senior US officers.

Mr Vance visited an American army base on the island and claimed Denmark has “not done a good job” in relation to the territory.

He mentioned: “Our message to Denmark is very simple: you have not done a good job by the people of Greenland.

“You will have underinvested within the individuals of Greenland, and you’ve got underinvested within the safety structure of this unbelievable, stunning landmass full of unbelievable individuals.”
