Electrical car drivers to pay congestion cost in central London

Drivers of electrical autos (EVs) should pay congestion prices in central London early subsequent yr – a transfer described by the AA as a “backward” step.

From 2 January, the house owners of electrical vehicles might be charged £13.50 a day, whereas electrical van and lorry drivers pays £9.

These are reductions of 25% and 50% respectively on the £18 which different motorists should pay from that date, a £3 enhance on the present charge of £15.

For the time being, pure battery-powered EVs are eligible for a 100% low cost on the congestion cost, which was first launched in 2003.

The costs are paid to drive into central London between 7am and 6pm on weekdays, and between midday and 6pm on weekends and financial institution holidays.

Mayor Sadiq Khan has insisted it’s important the scheme “stays fit for purpose”, claiming the capital faces a rise of two,200 further autos within the zone on a mean weekday subsequent yr.

The EV low cost might be lower farther from 4 March 2030, to 12.5% for vehicles and 25% for vans and lorries.

However Ginny Buckley, chief govt of EV recommendation web site Electrifying.com, stated: “It’s far too soon for TfL (Transport for London) to remove exemptions for electric vehicles from the London congestion charge.”

‘Transfer will backfire on air high quality’

Edmund King, the AA president, has urged Sir Sadiq to rethink.

He stated: “This is a backward step which sadly will backfire on air quality in London.

“Many drivers are usually not fairly able to make the swap to electrical autos, so incentives are nonetheless wanted to assist them over the road.

“This policy sends a confusing signal. You can’t champion clean air while penalising the vehicles that deliver it.”

EVs will account for practically a fifth of all autos within the congestion charging zone by the tip of this yr, in accordance with Transport for London (TfL).

With out the modifications, TfL has estimated there could possibly be greater than 2,000 further autos on the roads throughout working hours within the zone on a mean weekday.

TfL stated this is able to “undermine the benefits” of the scheme by inflicting “more queues and delays”.

Sir Sadiq stated: “Keeping London moving by reducing congestion is vital for our city and for our economy.

“Whereas the congestion cost has been an enormous success since its introduction, we should guarantee it stays match for function.”

The choice to place up the fees comes forward of Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ funds – when there are recommendations she might usher in a pay as you drive tax on EVs within the upcoming funds.
