Finnish PM apologises over ‘slanted eyes’ controversy after ‘racist’ submit by Miss Finland

The Finnish prime minister has apologised to Asian nations amid a rising controversy over the “slanted eyes” scandal which noticed members of parliament submit derogatory photos.

The controversy began earlier this month when the Miss Finland title holder, Sarah Dzafce, was pictured pulling again her eyes in her pal’s social media submit captioned: “Eating with a Chinese person”.

Dzafce, who is just not of Asian origin, mentioned she didn’t intend to offend anybody and apologised.

However the 22-year-old was nonetheless stripped of the title she had solely gained in September.

Finns Social gathering MPs Kaisa Garedew and Juho Eerola reacted by posting related footage of themselves, Finland’s public broadcaster, Yle, reported, as did Finns Social gathering MEP Sebastian Tynkkynen.

Mr Eerola has since apologised for his submit.

Dubbed the “slanted eyes” scandal by Finnish media, the incident is the most recent in a collection of instances through which members ofthe Finns Social gathering, a junior accomplice within the governing coalition, have been accused of posting or making racist remarks.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo of the pro-business Nationwide Coalition Social gathering, who leads a four-party coalition that includesthe Finns, issued a press release providing his honest apologies on Wednesday.

“These posts do not reflect Finland’s values of equality and inclusion,” Mr Orpo mentioned in statements launched by Finnishembassies in China, Japan and South Korea.

“Our message in Finland and to all our friends abroad is that the government takes racism seriously and is committed tocombating the issue,” he mentioned.

The Miss Finland organisation, in a press release to Reuters, mentioned it was apolitical however had acted in accordance with its values and rules.

Already shortly after taking workplace in 2023, Mr Orpo’s authorities confronted a no-confidence vote over racist on-line posts and statements made by a number of cupboard members from the Finns Social gathering.
