Flights suspended after man is sucked into aircraft engine on runway

Flights have been suspended at an airport in northern Italy after a person was sucked into the engine of a aircraft and killed.

A spokesperson for the airport in Bergamo, within the Lombardy area, has stated the 35-year-old was not a passenger or worker.

Witnesses have stated the person entered the airport terminal by driving the mistaken method down a street.

They added that he then left his automotive earlier than operating into the arrivals areas and heading to an emergency door that results in the runway.

He then ran in the direction of the engine of the aircraft that was getting ready to take off, they added.

The witnesses additionally stated police and airport safety went after the person however weren’t capable of cease him.

Police are investigating, and flights have resumed.

Flight operations have been suspended on the airport from 10.20am to midday native time (9.20am to 11am UK time) because of “a problem that occurred on the taxiway”, the airport stated in an announcement.

The flight, which was because of fly to Asturias in Spain, was rescheduled to three.55pm native time (2.55pm UK time).

Volotea, a Spanish low-cost airline, stated on X: “We regret to confirm flight V73511 from BGY-OVD was involved in an incident at Milan-Bergamo Airport at 10:35h. One person not onboard and not affiliated with the company was seriously injured. All 154 passengers and 6 crew are safe… We are doing everything possible to support the affected passengers and crew, providing them with psychological support, while working in close coordination with the Italian authorities.”
