Freeway to be devoted to Hillsdale deputy killed in site visitors cease

Freeway to be devoted to Hillsdale deputy killed in site visitors cease

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A portion of M-34 in Hillsdale County has been devoted to Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr., who was shot and killed throughout a site visitors cease final yr, with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signing Senate Invoice 70 into regulation Tuesday.

The invoice was first launched within the Senate and dedicates the portion of freeway M-34 in Hillsdale County between Pioneer Rd and S Pittsford Rd because the “Deputy Sheriff William Butler, Jr. Memorial Highway.”

Butler, a Hillsdale County sheriff’s deputy and Michigan Military Nationwide Guard veteran, was shot and killed in June 2024 whereas helping with a site visitors cease in rural Hillsdale County. Police say when Butler tried to arrest the person he pulled over, the person pulled out a gun and shot him. Butler was taken to the hospital by one other deputy, the place he died of his accidents. He’s survived by his spouse, Sarah, 5 kids, and two grandchildren.

If signed into regulation, non-public funding would utterly cowl the price of erecting and sustaining the freeway markers, as required underneath state regulation. The invoice now goes to Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s desk for potential signature into regulation.

As for the person police say shot Butler, 34-year-old Eric Michael Fiddler, he himself was shot and killed by Michigan State Police troopers after a prolonged manhunt, when regulation enforcement say he shot on the troopers, prompting them to return hearth.

Michigan Lawyer Basic Dana Nessel completed her evaluation of the incident in March, discovering the troopers justified.
