How possible is flash-flooding in Mid-Michigan?

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) – Within the wake of catastrophic flash flooding in Texas that has claimed the lives of at the least 90 folks, many are questioning companies there on their emergency preparedness.

6 Information spoke with native officers concerning the chance of an analogous emergency occurring in our space and what Emergency Administration does to maintain our neighborhood protected.

Stories say Texas flood waters rose greater than 20 toes in simply 45 minutes on Friday.

“Texas has a few issues that we don’t have to deal with,” stated Ingham County Emergency Supervisor Rob Dale. “One is the topography. There’s so much terrain with the hills, and we kind of do have Michigan hills, but not at the same level. So we don’t get those same types of floods.”

Dale says Michigan is extra susceptible to sluggish flooding versus Texas’s frequent flash flooding.

“It’s not a fast rise. It does cause damage and there are threats with it, but it’s not a rushing water situation,” stated Dale.

Again in February of 2018, elements of the Larger Lansing space had been hit with main river flooding. Since then, Dale says modifications have been made to forestall future occasions.

“We tested some new systems for stopping the flooding,” stated Dale. “We use a resource that inflates a bag basically across Kalamazoo Street and stops the water there.”

Together with these enhancements, the Ingham County Drain Commissioner and Emergency Supervisor say Texas zoning legal guidelines aren’t as strict as these in Michigan—and people legal guidelines hold folks protected throughout emergencies like floods.

“We don’t want people to build in one area and make the flood worse somewhere else,” stated Dale.

In keeping with Drain Commissioner Patrick E. Lindemann, Ingham County has a 2-to-1 compensating lower ratio for flooding prevention—meaning you have to present 2 sq. toes of area that may deal with the water with out injury for each 1 sq. foot you disrupt.

In Lansing, the Tollgate Drain is a system meant to gather stormwater.

“We can’t stop flooding entirely, but if we can reduce the impacts, that’s really what we’re looking for,” stated Dale. “Weather is one of the biggest disasters that we deal with, so we’re always watching and monitoring the conditions…across the rest of the country.”

Dale says getting data and warnings out early is the aim, so folks aren’t caught abruptly.
