India: Fireplace in neonatal ward kills 10 new child infants

Ten new child infants have died after a fireplace swept via a neonatal intensive care unit at a hospital in northern India.

The hearth, which additionally injured 17 different infants, unfold shortly via the ward in Maharani Laxmibai Medical School in Jhansi metropolis late on Friday, the place 49 infants have been being handled, based on state deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak.

He mentioned seven of the infants killed had been recognized, with the authorities working to determine the remaining three.

“Seventeen of the injured are receiving treatment in different wings and some private hospitals,” Mr Pathak mentioned.

He mentioned the reason for the fireplace was not but identified.

“We will identify those responsible for this tragedy and take strict action. The government stands with families during this difficult time,” he added.

Eyewitnesses mentioned rescue efforts started about half-hour after the fireplace began, and that the ward was already engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

Rescuers needed to break via the home windows to succeed in the infants.

Questions have been raised over the hospital’s security measures, as a result of mother and father of the infants and witnesses declare hearth alarms didn’t activate in the course of the blaze, based on The Related Press.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the “heart-wrenching” incident.

He wrote on X: “My deepest condolences to those who lost their innocent children in this.

“I pray to God to present them the power to bear this immense loss.”
