‘Israeli strikes’ on Yemen newspaper workplaces ‘mark deadliest assault on press in 16 years’

‘Israeli strikes’ on Yemen newspaper workplaces ‘mark deadliest assault on press in 16 years’

Nasser al Khadri, editor-in-chief of the publication 26 September, advised the CPJ that the workplaces in Sanaa have been hit on the afternoon of 10 September.

A baby, who had accompanied a journalist to work, was among the many lifeless, Mr al Khadri mentioned, whereas 22 journalists have been injured.

The reported assault by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) marked the deadliest single strike on the press since 2009, based on the CPJ.

That 12 months, 32 journalists have been killed when a convoy was ambushed within the Maguindanao bloodbath within the Philippines.

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate (YJS), which is affiliated to the Worldwide Federation of Journalists, acknowledged the 26 September publication was Houthi-controlled.

However it careworn that a number of civilian journalists with no navy affiliation have been amongst these killed within the strikes.

Chatting with the CPJ, Mr al Khadri mentioned the strikes marked an “unprecedented massacre of journalists”.

“It is a brutal and unjustified attack that targeted innocent people whose only crime was working in the media field,” he added, “armed with nothing but their pens and words”.

The IDF mentioned in a press release on 10 September that it had “struck military targets belonging to the Houthi terrorist regime in the areas of Sanaa and Al Jawf in Yemen”, together with the Houthi public relations division, which it mentioned was “responsible for distributing propaganda messages in the media and psychological terror”.

Reporters With out Borders (RSF) mentioned initially of September that 220 journalists in Gaza had been killed by the Israeli military since October 2023.

The IDF has insisted its forces don’t goal the media, and has claimed some journalists killed have been members of Hamas.

It comes after 5 Al Jazeera staff have been killed in an Israeli strike in Gaza final month, together with a journalist who feared he was going to be assassinated.

Anas al Sharif died alongside 4 of his colleagues from the community: Mohammed Qreiqeh, Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.

Evaluation: Israel might say it isn’t focusing on journalists – however it’s actually killing loads of them

The IDF confirmed the strike – and alleged that al Sharif was a “terrorist” who “served as the head of a terrorist cell in the Hamas terrorist organisation”.
