Katie Melua opens up about acute psychotic breakdown

Katie Melua has opened up about struggling an acute psychotic breakdown in her twenties, saying she feared it could depart her unable to make music.

The singer, who launched her multiplatinum debut album Name Off The Search in 2003, spent six weeks in hospital in 2010 and was pressured to take a break from her music profession.

Nonetheless, she returned to the charts along with her fifth album in 2012 and launched her ninth, Love & Cash, in 2023.

Now 40, Melua mentioned she hopes to proceed making music “until I die” in a brand new interview, talking on the Origins With Cush Jumbo podcast.

Requested if she ever thought-about quitting, she replied: “Oh no, I used to be afraid that I would not be capable to do it.

“I was afraid that, what if for whatever reason I’m not allowed to do it, or I can’t do it. I was worried about that, but thankfully that didn’t happen at all. It was my saviour.”

She added: “I really want to make records until the day that I die, honestly.”

Melua mentioned she had found what “small warning signs might be” and realized to take care of herself higher.

“I remember one of the therapy tools that I got from hospital was like, take one day at a time,” she mentioned.

The British singer, who was born in Georgia, gave start to her son in 2022 and mentioned he had “massively” helped her to remain targeted.

She has spoken candidly about her psychological well being points, beforehand telling The Telegraph she had by no means suffered melancholy earlier than however balancing album releases and touring had grow to be “crazy” within the months main as much as her breakdown.

The NHS says the three major signs related to a psychotic episode are hallucinations, delusions and confused and disturbed ideas.
