West Michigan’s Arctic blast by the numbers

Among the many phenomena we see this time of yr are ice balls. This occurs when small chunks of ice break off from the sheets that collect on the shoreline. Waves repeatedly push into the ice chunk, shaping it right into a sphere. As layer upon layer of water freezes onto the ball, it grows in measurement.

In Grand Rapids, 20 of the primary 27 days of January introduced excessive temperatures at or under the freezing level. That has helped in growing ice. Ice protection is close to common for Lake Michigan, whereas the deficit is bigger for Lake Superior, Ontario and Huron. Lake Erie has a considerable surplus.

We should always keep the present ice cowl with no important beneficial properties or losses within the days forward as highs maintain close to the freezing level all through the eight-day forecast.
