(The Hill) — The suspect within the Sunday taking pictures at a Michigan church was a Marine who served in Iraq, in response to navy officers.

Authorities recognized the suspect as Thomas Jacob Sanford, 40, who died on the scene.

The Marine Corps in an announcement obtained by Nexstar’s NewsNation mentioned Sanford was a sergeant who served between 2004 and 2008 and was deployed in the course of the Iraq Conflict. He was awarded a number of medals, together with the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, officers mentioned.

The FBI’s Detroit area workplace additionally posted on social media Sunday evening that the company was “asking that members of the public share any information that would assist in this investigation.”

The incident follows the taking pictures at a Catholic college in Minneapolis in late August.
