Dori Leyko, superintendent for East Lansing Public Colleges, mentioned the lacking state finances has faculties working at nighttime and taking determined measures.

“Some districts have even had to borrow money to make sure they can make pay role if the government shuts down and the October state aid payment is not made.” Leyko mentioned.

Faculty leaders warned that even when a finances passes quickly, some districts have already incurred curiosity funds of about $70,000 and won’t get that cash again. Leyko added that rural faculties might battle to offer transportation for college students. She mentioned free college lunches could possibly be in danger and voiced concern for college students who want additional assist.

Home Speaker Matt Corridor, R-Richland Township, instructed WDET final week, “We passed a school budget months ago. It’s been sitting in the Senate. We tried to come to agreement by the statutory deadline, July 1st. Democrats walked away from that negotiation.”
