They might additionally waive lease obligations when a property loses its certificates of compliance because of security hazards, improve penalties for unlawful lockouts, and revise the lease-ending course of for survivors of home violence or stalking.

“Michigan’s tenants’ rights laws have not kept pace with reality,” O’Neal mentioned in a information launch. “If I could sum up this package in a single phrase, it is this: we are working to reduce evictions in Michigan. We are giving renters fair notice and reasonable time to pay their rent, protecting them from surprise penalties and holding landlords accountable for maintaining safe and affordable homes. By doing so, we promote the stability and fairness that benefits everyone.”

Eight different Democrats sponsored the package deal, together with Reps. Kara Hope, D-Holt, and Penelope Tsernoglu, D-East Lansing. The lawmakers mentioned it will likely be formally launched within the Michigan Home within the coming weeks.
