LANSING, Mich.(WLNS) — A strong 7.7 magnitude earthquake rocked Thailand and Myanmar in a single day, destroying buildings, bridges, and a monastery. The results of the catastrophe are being felt in Mid-Michigan. 

6 Information spoke to Mi Thanda, an immigrant from Myanmar, who says she worries for her household’s lives again residence. 

“I’ve by no means seen in my life earlier than. I by no means see an earthquake occur like that earlier than in Thailand or in Burma,” stated Thanda.

She says when she heard the information in regards to the earthquake, she instantly referred to as her household. 

 “I just called them to see how they’re doing. ‘Is the house okay?’ I was so afraid,” said Thanda.  “Whether or not they were alive. We tell them to check the area, the house, everything.”

Thanda says a few of her family members dwell in Mandalay, which is near the catastrophe zone.      

“In Mandalay, it’s close,” said Thanda. “They say they’re shaking, but not that the house is breaking, but they are okay and alive.”  

The identical can’t be stated for others. Up to now, no less than 144 folks have been killed, and much more have been injured in Myanmar. No less than 10 folks died in Thailand after a high-rise constructing that was underneath building collapsed, leaving dozens of others lacking. 

Thanda says her father lives in Mawlamyine, and because of the ongoing battle in Burma, it’s tough to contact him. Now, with the earthquake, she says it’s even more durable. 

“It is exhausting to contact no web. No telephone,” stated Thanda. “They have to go to the mountain, and they don’t have internet. They don’t have anything.” 

Thanda says she’s at present planning on making a fundraiser for the folks of her residence nation that have been affected by the earthquake.
