The invoice bundle, launched in August, consists of Senate Payments 503, 504, and 505, which mirror Home Payments 4766, 4767, and 4768.

Collectively, the laws would:

Create a plan to analysis and monitor the size of microplastics contamination and any dangers it could pose to human well being or the setting — and advocate any mandatory motion or coverage modifications to deal with them

Create a program for the state to check for, monitor, and mitigate microplastics content material of public consuming water

Researchers have discovered microplastics within the setting and all through the human physique — in blood, saliva, organs, and even placentas and breast milk. Research executed on marine wildlife, animal fashions, and cell cultures have discovered issues equivalent to DNA harm, elevated danger of most cancers growth, and diminished fertility.

In people, microplastics have been linked to issues equivalent to immune system dysfunction and neurological points. Moreover, the chemical substances that make up the plastic can intervene with the human physique, disrupting essential bodily programs and doubtlessly inflicting most cancers.

“Everyone deserves to have confidence that their drinking water is safe,” stated State Sen. Dayna Polehanki (D-Livonia) “We all know microplastics are more and more present in consuming water, however we don’t know sufficient about their results, or how greatest to watch and mitigate them.”

Lawmakers say proactive and preventative measures are wanted to “protect” folks and the setting.

“We’re learning more about the hazards of microplastics every day, and finding them in new and concerning places,” stated State Sen. Sue Shink (D-Northfield Twp). “We need a plan to proactively research the scale of the problem and take the necessary steps to deal with it, instead of scrambling to react after it gets out of hand.”

Microplastics have even been present in fish from the Nice Lakes — at one of many highest concentrations of the pollutant on this planet.

“The best way to protect people and the Great Lakes from microplastics is to cut off pollution at its source,” stated State Sen.
