Michigan lowers flags to honor Pope Francis

Michigan lowers flags to honor Pope Francis

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, following a proclamation issued by President Trump, has ordered U.S. and Michigan flags throughout the State Capitol Complicated and in any respect public buildings to be lowered to half-staff to honor Pope Francis.

The flags might be lowered right now, April 22, and can stay lowered till sundown on the day of Pope Francis’ internment. “Pope Francis was an inspiration to countless Michiganders and people around the world. He led with grace, compassion, and humility,” stated Gov. Whitmer in a information launch despatched to six Information.

“He fought against poverty and called for action on climate change, economic injustice, and peace. He reminded us that the true measure of one’s devotion to God comes in one’s devotion to others. Pope Francis was a leader who called on all of us to live up to our better selves. As we celebrate his life and mourn his death, let us live by the values he believed in – love, mercy, and compassion for all,” added Gov. Whitmer.

Pope Francis was the primary pope from the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit Order) and the primary of Latin American id.

The Workplace of the Governor encourages Michigan residents, companies, faculties, native governments and different organizations to decrease flags to half-staff.

To decrease flags to half-staff, the flag must be hoisted to the height for a second after which lowered into place. This course of is reversed earlier than the flag is lowered for the day.

Flags must be returned to full employees on April 27.
