LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Michigan Medication, the College of Michigan’s medical heart, will not provide gender-affirming care, similar to hormone remedy and puberty blockers, for sufferers underneath the age of 19.
The college stated that is the results of authorized and regulatory stress to the establishment.
“The University of Michigan, including Michigan Medicine, is one of multiple institutions across the country that has received a federal subpoena as part of a criminal and civil investigation into gender-affirming care for minors,” the college stated in a press release Monday. “In light of that investigation, and given escalating external threats and risks, we will no longer provide gender affirming hormonal therapies and puberty blocker medications for minors.”
The assertion continues: “We recognize the gravity and impact of this decision for our patients and our community. We are working closely with all those impacted, and we will continuously support the well-being of our patients, their families, and our teams.”
State Rep. Emily Dievendorf (D-Lansing) decried the choice, calling the care “essential” and lifesaving. Dievendorf is Michigan’s first nonbinary state consultant.
“Gender-affirming care is essential, evidence-based healthcare,” Dievendorf stated in a press release. “It saves lives and helps young people thrive. Do not let disinformation convince you otherwise.”
They added: “Michigan should be a place where all young people can live as their full, authentic selves. That’s the future we are building, together.”
Gender-affirming healthcare for trans youth underneath 19 remains to be authorized in Michigan.
